Crowns
A crown is like a thimble fitting over a prepared tooth. Crowns or caps are usually constructed using porcelain or porcelain reinforced with metal. Modern techniques and materials make it possible to fabricate beautiful new crowns which are indistinguishable from your natural teeth. Occasionally we recommend gold crowns for teeth at the back of your mouth.
Crowns are widely used in dentistry for many reasons.
- To build up and protect heavily filled or worn teeth.
- To restore extensively decayed teeth.
- To modify a tooth shape and shade so improving cosmetic appearance.
- To protect against tooth fracture following root canal treatment.
A well made crown can last twelve to fifteen years and frequently longer. To maximise a crown’s life span a sensible diet, good oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist and hygienist are required.
